Introducing "METTLE," a gripping new play written and performed by Nicholas Collett and directed by Gavin Robertson.
Set in November 1942, the HMS Vanessa is detached from Convoy HX213 to join Convoy SC107, which faces devastating attacks from a wolfpack of U-boats over four days, resulting in the heaviest loss of ships from any trans-Atlantic convoy that winter. Gordon Collett, a 19-year-old from Sheffield, volunteers for the Royal Navy in 1940 to combat fascism and serves on the HMS Vanessa during these perilous times.
"I know this because I am his son, and I'm going to tell you his story," says Nicholas Collett. This moving and often humorous odyssey takes audiences from Liverpool to the USA, via Freetown, highlighting the courage of those who braved the sea's perils.
Supported by the Daparian Foundation, which aids veterans and emergency personnel on trauma journeys, "METTLE" draws on Nicholas's conversations with his father—stories revealed only during his parents' golden wedding anniversary—and his service records. Nicholas charts his father's progress as a young man in one of the most dangerous theatres of war, contrasting it with their personal relationship.
The story spans from 1930s Sheffield through the outbreak of war, U-Boat attacks, and treacherous weather, to the relative calm of West Africa and even a Glenn Miller concert. Told in a physical style with a set suggesting Sheffield steel, enhanced by sound and contemporary music, "METTLE" is a true modern odyssey you won't want to miss.
Physical theatre and storytelling from the award-winning creators of “Spitfire Solo” “Nelson – The Sailors’ Story” and “Your Bard” Nicholas Collett returns to our menu with his most personal theatre work yet.

Four experienced singers present a show of new and not so new music to entertain all ages. The Pocket Choral Society bring sweet sounds, improvisation and laughter together as one glorious whole!
Singing unamplified, the quartet bring their own songs and new arrangements of some more well known numbers from songwriters like Lennon & McCartney, Lou Reed and Tom Waits in an intimate and relaxed way.
The vicar, publican, farmer and village shop worker who form the group, bring a whole new vibe to the show as they combine the singing with tales of intrigue and village life from their own village of Pocket. Beautifully crafted harmonies, stories from village life and plenty of opportunity to sing along, this is one evening you don't want to miss!
'Excellent, innovative and fresh!' Bob Bignell, Bromsgrove Folk Club

A fantastic one-woman show with original songs, topical stories and Jewish humour; a comedy-cabaret with theatre, storytelling and audience engagement at its centre.
Naomi Paul uses her Jewish background to take you on a surreal journey: from Birmingham to the Balkans via lingerie shops and libraries. Sometimes poignant, always funny and ultimately uplifting, this show explores everything from the personal to the political. Of course, it also includes a 'biscuit' break!
You can also expect five original songs varying between folk, klezmer, tango and blues, performed against original backing tracks, all recorded live.
The show is written and performed by Naomi Paul, directed by Alison Belbin, and based on an original direction by Peta Lily.
'Wowed the audience with her own brand of deadpan Jewish humour.' Jewish Telegraph ★★★★ 'A fine comic celebration of modern Britain.' British Theatre Guide

Alan Barnes and David Newton have been playing duets for 42 years. These multi-award-winning masters of jazz cover a vast repertoire from Louis Armstrong to Chick Corea and play with an empathy that can only be drawn from experience. This is a partnership of virtuoso reed player Barnes, playing all the saxes, clarinet and bass clarinet, and one of the greatest solo jazz pianists this country has ever produced, David Newton. They have developed an empathy and telepathic sympathy which only playing together for many years can bring. The emphasis, as always, is on swinging, accessibility and interplay. Expect a hugely entertaining programme of straight-ahead jazz flawlessly played and interspersed with lots of anecdotes and peppered with humour.
'Barnes, plays music that was radical 50 years ago . . . but he infuses it with so much passion and energy you could believe it was minted on the spot.' John L. Walters, The Guardian.
'This is assured, beautifully played jazz' Peter Marsh, BBC Music Review
