The website of our very own local author, Keith Rylands-Bolton, goes live today! Let's all give him some support. Visit www.keithrylands-bolton.com and sign up on the 'News & Events' page to keep updated with Keith's latest musings, read his blogs and keep up with his promotional activities. You'll also be able to find all the details of Trying Times for Sebastian Scattergood, his latest novel. A thoroughly English tale, Trying Times for Sebastian Scattergood is published on 24th January 2023, and delights from its very first page. Predominantly focussing on a single horrible year – 2012 - in the life of the hapless Mr Scattergood, the novel is also a celebration and exploration of the poetry of Alfred Lord Tennyson and of the poet’s home county of Lincolnshire. Set in a small village in the Wolds, Trying Times is narrated by an earnest and pompous man who lacks any sense of self-irony. Part disaster diary, part social satire, Keith has penned a novel of literary fiction which is both humorous and moving in equal measure. Wry, wise, sentimental, down-home and sophisticated, Hoagy Carmichael’s songs are beloved for their warmth, wit and melodic beauty. This joyful, edifying and heartfelt salute to the Old Music Master features many engaging anecdotes and insights along with tracks from Chris’s acclaimed CD Hoagy including well-loved hits (Stardust, How Little We Know, Georgia On My Mind, Skylark, Ole Buttermilk Sky, Lazy Bones, et al) alongside obscure nuggets and delightful curiosities from Hoagy’s rich and varied songbook. "One of Britain's best singer-pianists...sophisticated tribute...charming work" **** LONDON EVENING STANDARD "Captures the spirit of a 20th-century giant...a delightful package" **** OBSERVER “Hoagy Carmichael was special...Ingham knows and understands" MOJO "This is just lovely..." SUNDAY TIMES - JAZZ CD of the WEEK & TOP 10 JAZZ CD 2014 “Classy product…with plenty of the right kind of swing” **** JAZZ JOURNAL “Hits the sweet spot every time” **** BBC MUSIC “An excellent night by any criteria…the music was of the highest calibre...highly informative and entertaining” JAMES ALBRECHT, STUDIO DIRECTOR ST JAMES THEATRE, SW1 "Outstanding quartet...inspired solo forays...nifty and concise arrangements...a fine delectation of Hoagy delights conveyed masterfully" LONDON JAZZ NEWS "Mighty fine piano...no mere hanging on the shirt-tails of the great man, Ingham has his own personality...'Dear Bix' is one of the most emotional pieces I've ever listened to...perfect underpinnings...[an] outstanding CD" A celebration of the great American songwriter Hoagy Carmichael Hoagy Carmichael is one of the most enduring and endearing songwriters from the Golden Age of the Great American Songbook. Wry, wise, sentimental and sophisticated, Hoagy’s songs are beloved for their warmth, humour and jazz-inspired melodic beauty. From the prescient wit of ‘Old Music Master’ and the exotic misadventures of an opium-eater in ‘Hong Kong Blues’ to the spirit-calming, timeless evocation of home in ‘Memphis In June’ and ‘Georgia On My Mind’, these characterful gems of 20th century songcraft continue to have unique power to move and delight. Infused with the hot jazz spirit of legendary jazz cornettist and Hoagy’s dear friend Bix Beiderbecke, we unearthed some fascinating curiosities from Hoagy’s songbook and aimed to invest even the most familiar standards with a straight-ahead freshness. Like all successful songbooks, composers’ intentions tend to get obscured along the way. Listening to Hoagy’s own recordings as inspiration helped us get closer to the essence of the song. Tunes we’ve played a thousand times seemed to take on a new shine. Among the Hoagy gems here are two songs not penned by Carmichael. Banjo player Clancy Hayes wrote the still outrageous ‘Huggin’ And Chalkin’’ (a hit for Hoagy in the 1940s) while contemporary songwriting sage Dave Frishberg, the most potent and erudite of Hoagy’s Children, wrote ‘Dear Bix’. Hoagy was famously grief-stricken when Bix died and ‘Dear Bix’ sounds like a Hoagy love song channelled through Frishberg. It just seemed to belong. The project originated as a one-off concert for a festival, but the rush of good feeling generated by the show in both audience and band couldn’t be ignored. A warm public response to Hoagy’s songs was expected, but the musicians’ inspired and joyful reaction to this rich and varied songbook was a revelation. Just a note to be on the look out for fake texts from the Post Office about a missed delivery. It will take you to a very convincing but fake website which will then try to obtain data from you or scam you out of money. The Post Office NEVER sends out texts or emails regarding a parcel delivery. If you have any other texts or emails you're not sure are real or are a scam, ask on here and I/we will be happy to help.

Christmas Tree Festival - 10am - 4pm, weekends of 11/12 & 18/19 December, at Tealby Church. *Please note, on Sunday 19th December the times are 10am to 1.50pm This year’s theme is ‘Children’s songs and Nursery Rhymes’. Monies raised will be divided between the charities taking part, ranging from our Local village groups & surrounding smaller churches, to St Barnabas Hospice and Guide Dogs UK. Also, the Church porch will be a drop off point for our local food bank, so please if you can, bring along a donation to pop in the collection box. There will be a one-way system around the church, all you need to do is to try and guess how many nursery rhymes you can find along the way. Not only will there be the beautifully decorated trees to admire but edges and ledges will be packed with cryptic clue’s displayed ready to test your nursery rhyme skills! On Saturday 11th Dec between 10am and 1pm we are simultaneously holding the Christmas Market in Church for the first time. So, this gives the opportunity to shop for those presents whilst surrounded by the lovely displays. There will be a quiet area with a ‘Memory Tree’ for you to write your own personal messages along with the opportunity to light a candle and rest for a time of reflection if you so wish. Activities for the children on offer are Hook a Duck, or helping a local farmer decorate a Christmas Tree (but which farmer could that be!) plus crayoning and free refreshments. Funds raised will be solely from your donations, so please come along & help make this spectacular event a success On Sunday,19th December at 6pm, there will be a Traditional Carol Service at the church. All are welcome!

‘Tealby Torches’ is a running group that meet up each fortnight, on a Monday evening, to run around the various trails of Tealby by torch light. Everyone of all abilities is welcome! (though some routes may be challenging). Routes range from 3 – 10 miles. The next meet is Monday, 1st November, 6.30pm at Tealby Village Hall. Go to https://www.facebook.com/tealbytorches for more information or to ask any questions. Please bring your own headtorch & hi-vis gear. Trail trainers needed as routes will be slippy in the mud. We had a great turnout last time of 25 people, so we really look forward to seeing even more new members next time. It’s a great way to keep fit and socialise during these dark, cold months!!!! Let’s light it up!

Work has progressed on the long ford footpath at Tealby Thorpe that has been collapsing. As such some of the circular walkers may not be able to do a round route - although at this time it is still passable. Update - 1pm, 28/10/21: They've finished for the day; path still passable. It's a bigger job than they thought so back on Monday with a digger and bigger rocks! Update - 4pm, 03/11/21: The contractors have now finished the work they were asked to do and things now look much better and safer. There is more camber on one part of the path than we'd like but that was not in the area they were asked to repair, apparently. The foreman tells us that under that area is a large void which he has photographed and will show to the relevant council official. Whether any further action will result as a consequence, we'll keep you updated. At least now the most dangerous part of the path has been sorted.
